INTRODUCING
CHIRNSIDE

Occupying a strategic position overlooking the farmlands of the Merse in Eastern Berwickshire, Chirnside is approximately 7 miles from the historic town of Berwick-upon-Tweed and the same distance from Duns the County town. For many years the village functioned as an agricultural service centre catering for the needs of the large arable farms surrounding it. In the latter part of the last century with the onset of mechanisation, farms now working with only a tiny percentage of their previous staff levels, a number of light industries have formed as offshoots to the traditional ones. These include fish and potato processing, grain storage and distribution.

The main employer for many years now however has been a large paper processing mill just south of the village. Largely due to their presence, the population of Chirnside, unlike the Border area in general, increased by nearly 50% between 1971 and 1981. Until recently it remained steady at around 1200 with another few hundred occupying the neighbouring countryside. However our community is growing again with nearly 200 new houses built or in the process of being built. Nearly 200 children attend the thriving village primary school including 2 nursery classes. People are increasingly seeing Chirnside as a great place to live.

Further details of any of the above can be obtained in The Beacon or you can visit www.chirnside.org.uk which is the new official site for the village.
